The person behind the maps

About Terrastratas

I'm Elliot, and I run Terrastratas, a small studio based in Providence, Rhode Island, where I create custom 3D topographic maps.

I've always had a connection to the outdoors and a curiosity for how things work. I've also never minded taking the long way around if it meant learning something new or finding a better way to do something.

Terrastratas started with my first 3D printer and a map I made for a friend. I knew very little about mapmaking at the time, but one map turned into a few, then dozens, and eventually more than 1,000.

Curiosity shapes the work

Every map has a different story.

Every project brought a new question or challenge. That curiosity pushed me to teach myself geographic information systems, 3D modeling, and the technology behind creating maps. Over time, I began developing my own tools and processes to create more detailed, accurate, and personalized models.

What I enjoy most is that every map has a different story. It might be a favorite hiking trail, a place someone got married, a meaningful run, or an entirely different challenge involving a vineyard, museum, or educational display. I enjoy understanding what someone has in mind and figuring out how to make it possible.

Made in Providence, Rhode Island

Still personally made.

Today, I still personally make every map, from the original terrain data to the finished piece. My wife, Katie, lends a hand with design, packing, and the details that make everything come together.

Terrastratas has grown quite a bit since that first printer, but my approach hasn't really changed. I care about what I make, I enjoy the process, and I'm always looking for ways to make the next map better.
